Your Real Purpose

Many of my clients come to me looking for their purpose. They want to know what they are here on this planet to do. I get it – it’s a craving I also had for many years. I wanted to know what work I was meant to do and how I was meant to impact the world.

I believe the search for this right work is noble and good or I wouldn’t be a coach helping people to find their own unique answers to that question. Yet, what many people often overlook is that our purpose is much bigger than just figuring out what work we are meant to do.

Our real purpose is to reach the full expression of who we are meant to be. And this is not something that we simply find an answer to – it’s a lifelong process of inner searching and unfolding.

I believe, as Elizabeth Gilbert says in her latest book, “Big Magic,” “The Universe buries strange jewels deep within us all, and then stands back to see if we can find them. The hunt to uncover those jewels, that’s creative living.” And as Liz says, it takes great courage to go on the hunt for them.

These “jewels” are more than just skills and talents that can be applied to work. Sure, that’s one way to use them. But they can be expressed in many ways. For example, you can use your gift of compassion as a hospice nurse; or, you could be a factory worker who spreads that compassion to everyone you meet. There is no one “right” way to use your gifts and talents.

We all came into the world with seeds of potential within us. As I see it, our real purpose in life is to find those seeds, nurture them and bring them to full, rich, bloom and share our gifts with the rest of the world.

If you are playing small and not discovering what your gifts are, then you’re not only doing yourself a disservice – you’re doing the entire world a disservice.

Finding those hidden jewels within yourself and then nurturing and growing them to full bloom – that is your real purpose.
